Relationship Grief

"Learn How to Cope with Relationship Grief and start Your Recovery from suffering such a Major Loss"

"Discover a Revolutionary New Approach that will help You heal from the loss of a significant relationship and get Your Life back on track"

From the desk of Maurice Turmel PhD

Dear Friend,

  • Are You feeling overwhelmed by the emotional effects of having lost a significant long-term relationship?
  • Are You feeling angry, anxious, depressed or hurt as a result of this Loss?
  • Are You looking for help to deal with your feelings of relationship grief?
  • Are You ready to begin your relationship grief recovery so you can get your life back on track?

My name is Maurice Turmel, and I know how you feel.  On the scale of stressful life events, relationship grief is one of the top three.  Losing a significant relationship in your life is tantamount to a death.  It is the death of an "Us" that once was full of hope and promise and is now completely shattered. Complications arise if your former wife, husband or partner left you for someone else. Your self-esteem takes an even bigger blow under these circumstances.

Breaking up with your lover, partner or spouse is a major event in your life. Some would argue that the consequences are not much different than losing a loved one through death. A relationship breakup is a death, the death of possibilities, a future full of promise and plans that were evolved during your better days together. Feelings of loss, sadness and grief are common to the experience. What you go through is a period of mourning and bereavement over the death of possibilities.

The "Us" that constituted your relationship has suffered a fatal blow. As with any instance of loss we are left feeling bewildered and confused.

If you’re the one who initiated the breakup, then you may have feelings of guilt. You’ve noticed a change in your feelings toward your partner or spouse. You’ve been feeling more and more estranged from them. You’ve started to dream about a life on your own, or with someone else. You feel guilty because you know your partner will be hurt. You’ve already been grieving this relationship for some time prior to informing your partner of your decision.

If you’re the one who was left, then you are feeling abandoned and lost. You can’t believe what is happening and you’re scrambling to try and fix it. What you don’t yet realize is that your partner is already gone, mentally, spiritually and even physically. Your grieving is about to begin, but not before you move heaven and earth to try and save what is already over.

I wrote "How to Cope with Grief and Loss" as a response to the various types of losses my clients were bringing to the consulting room. Addressing relationship grief was particularly poignant because of its complex nature. It is a vastly different experience for the one being left then the one doing the leaving. However, at the core of every loss experience lies an emotional component which seems to get the least amount of attention in most approaches to relationship grief. This book addresses that component directly and with the utmost respect and sympathy. Here's what one reader has to say:

My Favorite Book on the Grieving Process

"I have read several books on grief and loss and I can safely say that "How to Cope with Grief and Loss" has been my number one source of consolation.  This book is easy to read and struck many chords for me.  In fact, I saw myself in so many of the stories, I felt the book had been written just for me."
Mrs. A. Richard, Ontario Canada.

"How to Cope with Grief and Loss - Support, Guidance and Direction for Your Healing Journey" answers all of your questions about Relationship Grief and more"

This Innovative Audio-Ebook has already helped many individuals grieving a lost relationship and I know it can help YOU!

Here's what you need to know about me . . .

  • I have a PhD in Counseling Psychology, along with an M.A. and B.A. in Psychology for a total of 9 years of University training.
  • I have 25 years experience as a practicing therapist, helping individuals and families deal with all kinds of losses, including the loss of a husband, wife or partner through accident, murder and suicide.
  • My grief podcasts, articles and radio show interviews are regularly featured on Self-Growth.com, EzineArticles.com, Holistic Junction.com, Helium.com, ArticleBase.com, LearnOutLoud.com, GoArticles.com, BlogTalkRadio.com, Live365Radio.com, AchieveRadio.com and The Personal Growth Advisor.com, to name but a few.
  • I have appeared on numerous regional and national television programs to answer questions regarding grief and loss recovery.

Women, more than men, usually initiate a breakup. Lack of affection, lack of attention, lack of sharing and similar issues have brought them to this stage. In my practice I saw more men than women in the state of panic after a breakup. They were in "repair" mode all of a sudden, and were pulling out all the stops to try and prevent their partner from leaving. They claimed to be ready to change their behavior, go to counseling or see a minister, all the things their wife or partner had been asking for up to this final point. Sadly, for these men, it was already too late.

Men leave relationships as well, but less frequently than women. Regardless of who initiates the breakup, there will be grieving for both parties. In my practice, I saw both sides of the story, bewildered men and women trying to save their relationship not realizing it was already too late. If infedelity was the issue, then the hurt was amplified by betrayal. Whatever the circumstances, both parties needed to engage in relationship grief recovery.

With gay couples, the experience is much the same. Being left causes deep hurt. Being the one leaving also brings on hurt, but relief as well, and of course, guilt. For the person leaving, the relationship has been over for some time. Bringing the matter to a head constitutes a first step in their healing journey. For the one being left, their relationship grief journey has just begun.

An Exceptionally Inspiring Book

"Dr. Maurice Turmel has written an exceptionally inspiring book for those experiencing the grieving process, and for the general reader as well.  Filled with inspirational stories, poetry and music, "How to Cope with Grief and Loss" is more than just a book, it is an interactive experience that will raise your spirits.  Dr. Turmel has the knack of hitting just the right note at just the right time.  I truly enjoyed this work. It is a gem that you can refer back to again and again when you're feeling low, or when you need a spiritual lift."  Kenneth Maclean, author "The Vibrational Universe"  http://www.kmaclean.com

Wonderful Stories of Hope and Healing

"Wonderful stories of hope and healing, told with a simple wisdom. Dr. Turmel presents us with a difficult topic, and addresses grieving with an uplifting and inspirational voice."   Stone Wallace, Author

Whether you’re the one initiating or the one who was left, there will be grieving to do. As already mentioned, a relationship breakup is like a death. Some would say that dealing with the death of a loved one might be easier because you know you will not see them again. In a breakup situation there will be property, children and a whole host of matters to deal with which means regular contact for some time to come. And that contact brings the most pain for the one who was left.

My first marriage ended this way. My young wife was unhappy in our relationship and became involved with another man. One day announced she was leaving. We had two small children. I was devastated by the news. She was the one relieved about leaving. It took me 3 years to get over that loss. If it hadn’t been for the children, I would have recovered much sooner. Not having access to my children on a daily basis broke my heart. It was the single most devastating aspect of the breakup.

I had some help in terms of group counseling, but nothing akin to what is available today. If I knew then what I know now about relationship grief, I would have recovered in a matter of months, and not years. I needed to do some personal self-esteem work and my group experience helped with that. In the end the breakup and search for approprate relationship grief help drove me to become a therapist. For that outcome, I am eternally grateful.

I know what you’re going through. Sadness, guilt, remorse, "questioning what could I have done differently".  Such thoughts and feelings run through your mind one after the other. Obsessions, feelings of panic and disorientation are all part of the breakup experience. You will have to deal with your feelings now. If that’s alien to you then you have quite a challenge ahead. If you’ve been through a loss before, then you might have an advantage in terms of knowing what needs to be done to get yourself back on track.

Once you are ready to engage your relationship grief your recovery can begin. You will need help to get through this. Your friends and family can be great supports, but not if they’re in the business of bashing your former mate. That’s why a divorce or grief group that deals with relationship breakup could be beneficial for a balanced approach. Adding a good grief resource such as "How to Cope with Grief and Loss" will take you further and provide the ongoing guidance and support you will need to get through your recovery process.

Different Kinds of Loss

We must go through different stages of grieving to heal our hearts.  In the book, "How to Cope with Grief and Loss", Dr. Turmel opens the door to the heart with his amazing way of delivering stories to put us on the path of healing. The way he explains and guides us on the path of grief is a blessing that suggests Angels and God showed him the way.  This Audio Ebook is a true gift for anyone who's heart is grieving and looking to heal."
