What Happens During Grief Recovery
by Maurice Turmel PhD

Managing your grief recovery is a fairly straightforward process once you understand the steps involved.  There are specific actions you can take to counteract the physical and emotional reactions you will be experiencing as a result of your recent loss. A variety of grief recovery actions are available and worthy of consideration.

When we first hear about the death of a loved one we usually experience shock and dismay. A personal tragedy such as death can send our body and mind reeling from the impact of the news. Accepting this reality may take some time, because such harsh news is difficult to absorb.

Feeling confused and disorganized becomes part of our immediate reality as our mind grapples with the news of the loss. Some say we move through our days in a dream state as if we're disconnected from the world around us. We keep our emotions at bay as we move through the funeral arrangements, the arrival of family and friends and the inevitalbe post burial feeling of depletion.

Grief recovery demands that we focus on our feelings once the services are over and influx of family is done with. We become aware of anxiety, depression and similar emotional reactions that were kept at bay while practical matters were taken care of. Now it's our turn. Our feelings of loss, pain and hurt surface and need attention. Some kind of action will be required.

We become aware of what we are feeling and thinking at this point. The need for our personal recovery becomes palpable. Having gone through a grieving process before we likely have some idea of what to expect and what actions we need to take. If the experience of loss is new to us then our grief recovery will be complicated by that. Because our initial confusion now clouds our experience and understanding of all these emerging emotions.

In the initial stages, seeing a physician may be necessary to deal with issues such as sleep deprivation and anxiety. Medications are usually the short term response because the power generated by our various emotional reactions eventually starts to fade. However, this is not a time to try and tough things out.  Medical help for these reactions will help you settle down so you can get on with the business of grief recovery.

Long term grief recovery options can now be considered. With your intense and erratic emotional responses tempered my medications you may consider joining a grief support group, seeing a therapist or acquiring a good grief resource such as a grief book or audio resource. If you feel capable of managing your emotions then a good grief resource may all that's required.  Grief recovery proceeds relatively well with a program that focuses on helping you deal with your emotions.

The better resources provide a program for dealing with your emotions which always exhibit the strongest effects as a reaction to loss.
